Mr. Jones

He is the symbol (in addition to the evils of capitalism) of Czar Nicholas II, the leader before Stalin. Jones represents the old government, the last of the Czars. Old Major reveals his feelings about Jones and his administration when he says, "Man is the only creature that consumes without producing. So Jones and the old government are successfully uprooted by the animals. Little do they know, history will repeat itself with Napoleon and the pigs.

From the start of the novel, Mr Jones is seen as an unfit manager of the farm. He is also a ‘hard master’, cruel and lazy. After the revolution he spends more time at the pub. His attempt to regain the farm ends in humiliation when he lands in the manure heap. He ends up dying in a home for drunks, a pathetic character. His cruelty is stressed by Major in his speech
